Karamoja Women Birders
In 2020, the directors of Bird Uganda Safaris came to realise their dream of empowering Karamoja women with employable skills in mainstream tourism. This happened with support from the United Nations Developmental Program (UNDP) under the Youth4Business Entrepreneurship and the Innovation Challenge Program. Over 50 karamajong women spent a couple of weeks being trained in guiding skills with focus on birding.
The main objective was to train young aspiring female tourist guides in Karamoja region so as to contribute towards the much needed human resources and promote business development in the tourism industry of North Eastern Uganda.
For continuity and the sustainability of the project, Bird Uganda Safaris collaborates with Kara-Tunga Adventures in continuous engagement with the trained women guide to enable them acquire experience.
More support is still needed to ensure that more women and youth are skilled in various services of the tourism and hospitality sectors.
